Horticultural Notes
4′ x 5′ Maiapilo is Hawaii’s native Caper Bush. Often found along the coast Maiapilo is a good candidate for dry coastal gardens. The 2″ rounded leaves maybe with or without hairs. The beautiful white flower is important for the rare native Blackburn Sphinx moth. Birds enjoy the small cucumber shaped fruit. The entire bush is used medicinally to heal bone fractures. Today there is no culinary use of the fruit. [1]
